About Forensics Beat

Forensics Beat covers the work of building a case: evidence, case law, investigative technique and the tools that change how investigators work.

We write for the people who work the case: detectives, investigators, analysts, prosecutors, and the supervisors and trainers who support them.

What we cover

  • Evidence. How it's collected, reviewed and kept usable in court, from video and phones to records and recorded interviews.
  • Case law. Rulings that change what investigators can do and how, explained in plain English.
  • Technique. Methods that hold up in the field and in the courtroom.
  • Cold cases. What reopened and solved cases teach about the cases still open.
  • Tools. Honest looks at investigative technology, including AI: what it does well, where it fails, and what to ask before relying on it.

Our standards

  • Accuracy first. We cite rulings, statutes and sources so you can check them yourself.
  • Practical over hype. If a tool or technique has limits, we say so.
  • No case evidence. We never publish criminal justice information or evidence from real cases. Examples are drawn from public records, published rulings, or are clearly marked as illustrations.
  • Corrections. If we get something wrong, we fix it and say what changed.

Who publishes Forensics Beat

Forensics Beat is published by Detelytics (https://www.detelytics.ai/), the company behind DeedEye (https://www.deedeye.com/), an AI-assisted investigative workbench for law enforcement.

Most of what we publish is not about our products. When an article discusses DeedEye or another product Detelytics makes, we say so clearly in that article.
